Luxury living at 30,000 feet doesn't require a private, customized plane if you book first class flights aboard Etihad's newest revelation: first class apartments. Complete with a large Poltrona Frau leather armchair and a spacious ottoman/bed combination, these first class apartments will line the upper deck of Etihad's new Airbus 380 along with Etihad's luxurious residence suites and business class studios.

Setting the Stage
Premium passengers enter the upper deck to a welcoming, upscale lobby that resembles a warm, boutique hotel entrance. Passengers proceed to their apartments down a broad, 27-inch aisle that allows passengers to pass each other comfortably. Just beyond the first class apartments, the space is filled with an inviting, full-serviced lounge area for passengers to use throughout the flight when they want to eat, drink or work in the company of others.

With a vibe that's more upscale cruise line cabin than first class seat, these apartments are completely ensconced in their own private world. Stylish sliding doors invite passengers into their apartments, where 64-inch tall walls provide luxurious privacy. The spacious 39 square foot apartment is completely free of overhead bins and bulkheads, giving passengers a roomy, open and airy space that feels as far removed from cramped flying as possible. Each apartment has one to three windows, an unheard-of feature in the industry, and ambient lighting is employed throughout the cabin to create an enticing, comfortable environment.

First Class Amenities
The custom leather-clad apartment is filled with luscious perks, from a swiveled and fully adjustable 24-inch flat screen monitor to a spacious wardrobe and a full-size lighted vanity. A chilled drinks cabinet, noise-cancelling headsets, complimentary lounge wear, total in-flight connectivity and the services of a highly trained chef ensure that first class apartment passengers luxuriate in their flight time.

The custom leather armchair itself is a luxury, with 30 inches of breadth, pleasing recline functions and a Lantal pneumatic cushion system. And, if passengers want to freshen up during the flight, they can avail themselves of a fully equipped first class shower room.

Stretch Out and Relax
Although the apartment's extra seating/sleeping area is billed as an "ottoman," it is more like a sofa than a footstool and can seat up to three visitors for comfortable on-board socializing. The attentive turn-down service reveals that the ottoman is an 80.5-inch completely flat bed with hand-crafted, all-natural mattresses, duvets and pillows. Etihad also invested in state-of-the-art technology developed specifically for their first class apartment beds. This articulating, transverse mechanism maximizes the bed space for sleeping, stowage and socializing. The partition between two apartments can also be removed to create a comfortable double bed and extra living space for passengers traveling together.

Luxury On the Ground
As if in-air pampering isn't enough, Etihad provides complimentary chauffeur service on the ground for its first class flight passengers. And, at its home-base Abu Dhabi Airport, Etihad porters and concierges meet passengers curbside and whisk them away to a special reception area. There, passengers enjoy five-star dining, complimentary spa treatments and a score of entertainment options.

Etihad's new A380 aircraft and its first class apartments take off in December of 2014 on routes between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow. Flights to New York, Paris, Melbourne and Sydney are expected to begin in 2015.
